Park and Rec Department makes big splash for CAM
The Branson Parks and Recreation Department helped fill the food supply and bank account of Christian Action Ministries (CAM) last week by sponsoring a free swim day at the AquaPlex. Everyone who came to the AquaPlex on June 25 could swim free if they brought at least two non-perishable food items or made a cash donation to CAM. About 500 adults and children took advantage of the free swim. According to Branson Parks and Recreation Director Cindy Shook, 557 pounds of food and $304 in cash were collected that day for the local non-profit organization that assists Taney and Stone County families in need.
One month left to recycle phone books
Reduce waste and help Girl Scouts. To encourage telephone directory recycling, the cities of Branson and Hollister have teamed up with Nestle Purina PetCare to place large paper-recycling bins at several locations in the area until August 1. Those locations include: Cedar Ridge Shopping Center (Kmart/Country Mart); Home Depot at Branson Hills Parkway;
Wal-Mart on Highway 76; Country Mart in Hollister; Branson Recycle Center.
Fireworks 2009
Knowing that fireworks add immensely to our enjoyment of the Fourth of July holiday and to keep your family safe, the Branson Fire Department urges people to Celebrate Safely when purchasing and discharging fireworks. Missouri residents are encouraged to also know their local laws for sales and display of fireworks as several communities have banned their sale and use. In the City of Branson, fireworks may be purchased through July 10 and discharged from 7 a.m. to midnight on July 3 and 4 only.
Action taken by Branson Board of Aldermen at June 23, 2009 meeting
SECOND READING AND FINAL PASSAGE BILLS. Board eliminates nightly rentals in residential areas. Aldermen approved a change in the city code that prohibits the city from issuing business licenses for any nightly rental of single family homes in a residential area. This new law came about due to complaints from residents that homes in their neighborhoods were being turned into commercial, nightly rentals for tourists.
City water quality report released
No violations of water quality standards found in drinking water. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has released the city of Branson’s annual Water Quality Report for the 2008 calendar year, and there were no violations of water quality standards. The report is an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requirement of all water systems, both municipal and private. The Missouri DNR regulates all water systems and requires testing on a regular basis to ensure its safety.
Aldermen, merchants tour downtown to get ideas for improvement
Branson Mayor Raeanne Presley and four members of the Board of Aldermen and city staff joined about 40 people, some of them downtown merchants, for a walking tour of downtown Tuesday evening. The purpose was to obtain ideas for improving the appearance of the downtown area to visitors. The citizens and city officials split into four groups and strolled downtown streets for about 1 ½ hours looking at buildings, landscaping and public property.
